Round 7: Castle Combe Race 1

In S Class 2003 Champion Mark Speller secured pole position, however, 2nd place man Sayle made a flying start to take the lead heading into the first corner. Speller was on the bumper of Sayle’s car waiting for the right opportunity to make his move. However, he clipped the marker bollards at the chicane and was given a stop-go penalty. This allowed Arthur Forster to move up to second and pressure lead man Sayle. As they came across back-markers towards the end of the race, the traffic worked against Forster’s favour, allowing Sayle to secure the victory. James Loukes finished 3rd having kept a hard charging Nordstrom at bay in 4th.

In Club Class pole sitter Craggs made a great start to hold the lead going into the first corner. He soon came under pressure from Thruxton double-header winner David Shepherd, who managed to take the lead from Craggs. However, Shepherd had a coming together with an S-Class car which bent his steering rack and caused him to lose momentum and drop back to 5th. The battles at the front allowed Stephen, who was lying in 6th, to close the large gap between himself and the front runners. After a couple of laps he was on the bumper of David Shepherd, from which point a mammoth battle for 5th position ensued. They kept on switching positions as they drove bumper-to-bumper around the challenging and super fast 2 mile circuit. Heading into the final corner on the penultimate lap, Shepherd missed the apex allowing Stephen to nip through on the inside and eventually cross the line in 5th. Craggs secured his third win of the season, followed by Graham Parsons in 2nd who made a return to the Challenge having missed the first half of the season. Eric Bailey finished 3rd just ahead of Martin Depper.
