 Round 5: Thruxton Race 1

Having made a great start from pole position, Stephen held the lead for the first lap. However, as he approached the final chicane, brake fade caused him to enter the corner too fast and hit the huge kerbs. This allowed David Shepherd and Barney Craggs to overtake into 1st and 2nd positions. For the rest of the race, Stephen was struggling to keep up to pace with a failing clutch and gearbox. Having had to fend off Rob Austin and series newcomer Eric Bailey all race long for 3rd position, Stephen’s gearbox and driveshaft broke on the 13th and final lap causing him to retire.

Meanwhile, Barney Craggs overtook David Shepherd into 1st position after having to take a short cut across the chicane due to a brake problem. Although Craggs crossed the line in 1st, he was given a three second penalty which dropped him back down to fourth position. David Shepherd therefore clinched his maiden win, with local ‘boys’ Eric Bailey and Rob Austin finishing 2nd and 3rd.

In S Class James Loukes twice stole the lead from pole sitter Sayle and managed to create a gap between himself and the rest of the pack. A close battle between Andy Sayle and Mark Speller ensued, while Arthur Forster followed behind waiting for the right time to make his move. Having slipstreamed his competitors, Forster pounced on the opposition with just a couple of laps remaining, clinching his fourth win of the season. Mark Speller crossed the line close behind to claim 2nd.
